Vascular & Endovascular Surgery: Conditions & Treatments
The UCI Health vascular and endovascular surgical team uses the most advanced technology and procedures to diagnosis and treat patients with all types of circulatory system conditions and diseases at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County’s only Level 1 trauma center and university medical center.
We accept referrals from healthcare providers and surrounding medical centers for rare and complex vascular disorders. We also provide consultations to patients seeking a second opinion on treatment options and provide their primary care physicians with prompt feedback.
Conditions
Our fellowship-trained specialists diagnose and treat the following conditions:
Aneurysms (enlargement or weakness of vessel walls)
- Thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms
- Abdominal aortic aneurysms
- Peripheral aneurysms (iliac, femoral, popliteal)
- Pseudoaneurysms (false aneurysms)
|
- Visceral arteries (blood vessels to the spleen, kidney, liver and intestines)
- Mycotic aneurysms (aneurysms caused by infection)
- Inflammatory aneurysms
|
PAD, or peripheral arterial disease (blockage of vessels to the head, organs and limbs)
- Aortoiliac occlusive disease (blocked iliac arteries)
- Intermittent claudication (leg pain associated with exertion)
|
- Limb-threatening ischemia (compromised blood flow)
- Upper extremity ischemia
|
Arterial dissection (tearing of arterial walls)
- Aortic dissection and related complications
- Carotid artery dissection
|
- Traumatic arterial dissection
|
Cerebrovascular disease
- Extracranial carotid and vertebral artery disease
- Subclavian steal syndrome
|
- Carotid body tumors
- Aortic arch great vessel disease

Venous disorders
- Varicose veins and spider veins (telangiectasias)
- Deep venous thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary embolism (venous thromboembolization)
|
- Post-thrombotic syndrome
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Venous stasis ulceration
|
Major aortic branch vessel disease
- Renovascular hypertension/ischemic nephropathy
|
|
Other vascular conditions and diseases
- Traumatic and iatrogenic vascular injuries

- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Thoracic outlet syndrome (neurogenic, venous, arterial symptoms)
- Vasculitis
|
- Buerger’s disease
- Takayasu’s arteritis
- Marfan syndrome and other connective tissue disorders
- Congenital vascular disorders

Treatments
Our fellowship-trained physicians are experts in traditional open, minimally invasive and endovascular medical and surgical treatments and procedures.
Endovascular approaches allow for safer, less-invasive treatment of blood vessels disorders, using very small incisions and catheters guided by radiologic imaging. These include dissolving blood clots, balloon angioplasty, stenting and plaque removal.
We also treat very complex aneurysms with covered stents, eliminating the need for open surgical treatments. We also have special expertise in such complex problems as:
- Aortic aneurysms extending above the kidneys
- Blockages of arteries to the intestines and kidneys
- Thoracoabdominal aortic dissections
These advanced, less-invasive procedures mean that patients experience shorter hospital stays, less pain, fewer infections and faster recovery time.
We perform the following open surgical techniques:
- Anterior thoracic and lumbar spine exposure
- Arteriovenous fistulas, grafts and tunneled catheters
- Carotid endarterectomy
- Carotid subclavian bypass and transposition
- Hemodialysis access procedures
- Laparoscopic peritoneal dialysis catheters
- Lower extremity bypass and endarterecomy
- Major and minor amputations
- Median arcuate ligament syndrome decompression
|
- Mesenteric and renal bypass
- Open abdominal aneurysm repair
- Thoracic and thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair
- Thoracic outlet decompression and first rib resection
- Thoracoscopic sympathectomy
- Upper extremity bypass
- Varicose vein removal
- Vascular trauma
|
We are skilled in endovascular approaches for:
- Carotid angioplasty and stenting
- Thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR)
- Endovascular aortic dissection treatment
- Mesenteric and renal angioplasty and stenting
- Endovenous saphenous vein laser ablation (EVLT)
|
- Percutaneous hemodialysis access resurrection and revision
- Fistulography, balloon-assisted maturation, thrombectomy, angioplasty and stenting
- Aortoiliac and lower extremity recanalization, angioplasty and stenting
|
We use a hybrid approach for:
- Aortic arch debranching
- Hybrid thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair
|
- Hypogastric aneurysm repair
- Hypogastric artery preservation

Other services
At UCI Health, we emphasize treatment of the whole patient, incorporating preventative and nonsurgical treatments for peripheral vascular diseases. This includes medical management with medications, dietary modification and exercise or physical therapy, and smoking cessation.
We also conduct lymphedema evaluations and offer a wound healing clinic for patients whose vascular disease inhibits proper healing.
