Cancer Registry
The Cancer Registry at UCI Health is an official repository for the collection, management and analysis of data about individuals who have been diagnosed with a malignant or neoplastic disease (cancer).
We are accredited by:
- The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
- The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
What we do
Our Cancer Registry team gathers information on all patients who are diagnosed and treated for a malignancy by our UCI Health physicians.
What we collect
Our registry specialists collect the following information on individual cancer cases:
- Demographic data, including patient’s name, address at time of diagnosis, sex, race and age at diagnosis
- Diagnostic data, including type of cancer (such as breast cancer) and stage of disease at time of diagnosis
- Treatment data, including whether the patient had surgery, radiation or chemotherapy as the first course of treatment
- Lifetime follow-up of patients for surveillance outcomes
We adhere to national standards set forth by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer and the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) registry.
What happens to the data
The information collected by the Cancer Registry is sent as secure, encrypted files to the California Cancer Registry, as required by law. Legislation declaring mandatory cancer reporting became effective in California in 1985. Beginning in January 1988, under the Statewide Cancer Reporting Law (Section 103885 of the Health and Safety Code), the state registry has gathered information about cancer for the entire population of California through regional population-based registries such as ours.
Information collected is used to:
- Evaluate patient outcome, quality of life and satisfaction issues as well as implement procedures for improvement
- Provide follow-up data for cancer surveillance
- Calculate survival rates by various data items
- Provide data for cancer program activities
- Analyze referral patterns
- Allocate resources at the reporting healthcare facility
- Develop educational programs for healthcare providers and patients
- Evaluate the efficacy of treatment guidelines
This information helps researchers update nationwide cancer statistics. It also helps them monitor changes in national and regional cancer rates, and to track those treatments that prove most effective.
Protecting patient privacy
