IN THE NEWS: The healthcare sector is a major consumer of energy. In fact, hospitals use on average five times as much electricity as an office building of an equivalent size.

Joe Brothman, director of facilities and general services at UCI Health, spoke to Fox 11 Los Angeles about charting the future of healthcare sustainability in Orange County and how unique that is.

“There are a lot of great construction projects, especially in California, but nothing quite like this. There are a lot of people looking at us for being the first to use the technology in this way, on this scale, for this application,” he said.

The goal, Brothman noted, is to be one of the greenest hospitals in the country.

“Not only are we going to have lower local emissions, but we’re going to be resilient to natural disasters. Being able to provide care to our community in those times, when it’s most crucial, is what UCI Health wants to do."
