Avoid the swab, save the eardrum

IN THE NEWS: Citing a recent study, the Orange County Register discussed ear drum injuries and cotton swabs with Dr. Hamid Djalilian, director of Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at UC Irvine’s Department of Otolaryngology. Such injuries are rare, he says. The bigger danger is that you’ll accidentally scrape the inside of the ear canal with a swab, which can cause an infection. That’s why Djalilian recommends that people not use swabs.
