At UCI Health, we specialize in therapies such as radiation, chemotherapy or hormones that can be used to shrink tumors before surgery. This approach may allow our surgeons to perform less invasive surgical procedures.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and laser imaging of the breast
We are nationally recognized leaders in MRI and laser imaging of breast disease in collaboration with the UCI Health Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic.
- Minimally invasive surgery
Whenever possible, our surgeons use minimally invasive, state-of-the-art techniques that can reduce our patients' discomfort and shorten recovery times. For breast cancer patients, this may involve skin-sparing and/or nipple-sparing mastectomies for a more pleasing cosmetic result. Our surgical oncologists work collaboratively with UCI Health plastic surgeons on reconstructive procedures, which sometimes can occur at the same time as the cancer surgery.
In some cases, surgery to remove the adrenal glands can be performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedures rather than open surgery.
At the UCI Health Melanoma Center, our surgical oncologists work closely with with dermatopathologists, dermatologists and plastic surgeons to diagnose and treat skin melanomas in their earliest stages. We also participate in many promising melanoma clinical trials, including sentinel node mapping and immunotherapy.
We are dedicated to advancing the state of the science in cancer surgery. At any given time, our patients have access to many clinical trials addressing a wide range of cancers.
Our board-certified UCI Health surgical oncologists work with specialists in hematologic oncology, radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, as well as highly skilled nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide our patients with the best possible care.
