PM&R, also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that impair one’s movement. The impairments can be permanent or temporary, and primarily affect nerves, bones and muscles.
Physiatrists must complete four years of medical school, a one-year internship and a three-year residency specializing in physiatry.
Physiatrists see a wide range of cases, including burn, stroke and arthritis patients. Many patients can benefit from PM&R treatments.
The length of your treatment depends on your condition, its severity and your progress in therapy. After your care team puts together a plan, the goals and duration of your treatment are discussed with you.
