UCI Health — Fountain Valley PGY1 - Pharmacy Residency Program

The UCI Health — Fountain Valley PGY1 Pharmacy Residency prepares you to confidently manage medication therapy for a variety of diseases.

During clinical rotations, you will refine your drug therapy skills through patient care and develop expertise in specialized areas. You will also enhance your communication skills and gain experience educating healthcare professionals, patients, students and the community.

You will develop a personal practice philosophy, monitor your performance and commit to ongoing professional growth. Upon completing the program, you will have a clear career plan and valuable job skills.

Program Mission

Since 2006, UCI Health — Fountain Valley has offered an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency in General Pharmacy Practice. The program’s goal is to equip you with the skills, behaviors and attitudes necessary to succeed in the fast-paced, dynamic environment of acute care hospital pharmacy.

Number of Positions: two

Period of Appointment: 12 months

Salary: $74,000

Benefits: two weeks paid vacation and medical benefits

Staffing: One weekend day every other weekend

The program works with UC Irvine, Western University, University of the Pacific, USC and Chapman University to precept APPE students. Throughout the year, residents will complete BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certifications. They’ll also explore professional interests through a longitudinal research project. Residents can take part in seminars, conferences and other external events.

Residents will also be expected to develop independence and a balance of pharmacy operations through staffing, generally one weekend day every other weekend.

Requirements

  1. Applicants must be enrolled in (or be a graduate) of an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program.
  2. Applicants must register with the National Matching Services (NMS) and must adhere to the rules of the Match. Registration with the NMS will be waived only if a residency position remains unfilled after Phase I and Phase II of the Match.
  3. The applicant must submit to PhORCAS the following information by the specified deadline:
  • Complete PhORCAS application: Applications will only be accepted through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). Applicants are responsible for completing all required materials and verifying availability of references by the posted deadline.
  • Official school of pharmacy and/or graduate school transcripts.
  • Curriculum vitae, which should include all rotational experiences (completed and pending ones.)
  • Three letters of professional references. The reference writers must complete the online information via PhORCAS. The reference writers will need to address the applicant’s potential for success in the residency program. References should be from either faculty members in the applicant’s professional degree program or from practicing pharmacists with whom the applicant has had work or patient care experience.
  • Letter of intent.
