IN THE NEWS: There are a range of options for older adults who need assistance as they age, including nursing homes, independent living facilities and assisted living communities.
A lesser-known option is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). The communities offer a range of care levels as seniors' healthcare needs evolve. UCI Health geriatrician Dr. Steven P. Tam shared his recommendations for choosing a CCRC when the time comes with U.S. News & World Report.
“Review and compare the different options, as well as the requirements and services provided at the different facilities and care levels. Take the time to tour the community and meet people there and get their opinions of the community.”
Tam is a physician at UCI Health specializing in Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, healthy aging and memory changes in aging. He is also an associate clinical professor of medicine at UCI School of Medicine. He has repeatedly been recognized as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association.
