Memory Assessment Clinic

Memory loss is normal as we age. But when it undermines your daily routine or your safety, it could be a warning of something more.

If you’re forgetting the basics of daily living more often, don’t ignore it. Our experts can pinpoint what’s driving your memory loss to get you the right treatment.

Our approach to senior health memory assessment

We understand that spotting signs of memory loss as a senior can feel overwhelming and frightening. That’s why we’ve created a dedicated and compassionate clinic to assess and treat your memory issues. Our geriatricians are specially trained in disorders affecting seniors to provide you with a precise diagnosis.

Our fundamental approach to care is collaborative and multidisciplinary. The way we can provide such a comprehensive approach is through the team efforts of all our providers. If you have concerns about your memory, you could potentially work with:

  • Geriatricians
  • Neurologists
  • Physician assistants
  • Pharmacists
  • Social workers
  • Psychologists
  • Nurses

When to see a doctor

Moments of forgetfulness are frustrating but normal as we age. However, as an older adult, you should seek a memory assessment if you:
  • Can no longer work
  • Can no longer manage your finances
  • Get lost frequently when driving
  • Experience dramatic personality or behavioral changes

How to work with us

You may get a referral from your primary care doctor or neurologist to see us. Or you can reach out to us directly at the Senior Health - Memory Assessment Clinic at UCI Health.

How is memory loss diagnosed?

To diagnose memory loss, we first give you a physical exam and a memory screening.

If it looks like we need further tests, we give you an in-depth cognitive evaluation by a neuropsychologist. Our priority is to identify the underlying cause of your memory loss, so we work closely with our neurologist colleagues.

A neurologist may perform blood, spinal cord fluid tests and brain imaging scans.

What are the causes of memory loss?

Memory loss can be caused by a neurodegenerative condition such as Alzheimer's disease, or by other conditions like undetected small strokes.

Depression, medication interactions, sleep problems, thyroid disorders, anxiety and vitamin deficiencies can also contribute to memory loss.

There are also many types of dementia that underlie memory loss, each requiring their own treatment plan.

What are the early signs of dementia?

Early signs of dementia show up differently for everyone, and can be subtle at first. Some typical dementia symptoms are:

  • Memory problems

  • Confusion

  • Difficulty with tasks

  • Language problems—difficulty speaking, understanding, or expressing thoughts, trouble finding words

  • Mood changes

  • Trouble with distance, location and driving

  • Difficulty handling money responsibly

How can I best support a family member with memory loss?

You can best support a family member experiencing memory loss by:

  • Creating consistent, predictable routines to structure their time

  • Encouraging familiar activities

  • Cultivating patience

  • Seeking emotional support and good mental health as a caregiver

Benefits of a senior health memory assessment clinic

Our clinic benefits you by:

  • Providing an accurate diagnosis
  • Offering an effective treatment plan tailored to your needs and lifestyle
  • Getting you seen by experts in geriatrics, neurology, pharmacology, social work and psychology

What to expect

You don’t need to do much preparation before your first appointment. We recommend that you gather some information to bring with you:

  • Bring a list of all medications you’re currently taking
  • Arrive well-rested
  • Bring a supportive friend or family member
  • Note any specific memory concerns or questions you want to discuss with your doctor

What happens after my memory assessment?

What happens after your memory assessment depends entirely on the results of your evaluation. There is no one-size-fits-all approach since memory loss can have so many different causes. It's important to identify and address the underlying problem.

If your memory loss stems from Alzheimer's disease, we may prescribe medications and lifestyle changes. But if a series of small strokes is prompting your memory loss, you may require surgery.
