IN THE NEWS: Is Irvine poised to become the healthcare center of the country? Over the next few years, six different healthcare brands will break ground or expand as part of a building spree.
Leading the way is UCI Health, which recently opened the new location of the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and is currently building UCI Health ― Irvine on the corner of Jamboree Road and Birch Street.
The $1.3 billion medical complex will be the nation’s first all-electric hospital. It follows the 2022 opening of the 9-acre, $185 million Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences. UCI Health CEO Chad T. Lefteris tells the Orange County Register that the medical, school and office space is known as the “health affairs impact.”
The boom will further strengthen the collaboration between the biotech and healthcare sectors.
Lefteris points to the Beall Applied Innovation Center, which since 2014 has been a business and research conduit that he says brings “startup technologies to life.” These relationships have allowed licensed biomedical discoveries by UCI faculty to transition into biomedical companies.
