Osteopathic medicine focuses on the whole person rather than a single condition.
Your doctor of osteopathy (DO) will address the relationship of your body’s muscles, nerves, bones and organs in a holistic manner.
While we always consider the latest medical evidence and technologies, DOs also focus on the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
In this patient-centered approach, we listen to your concerns and seek to partner with you about your care.
Osteopathic-related treatments offered at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute include:
Osteopathic manipulative treatment: This hands-on muscle manipulation technique seeks to improve range of joint motion and balance tissue and muscle mechanics in order to relieve pain. Techniques include stretching, gentle pressure and resistance.
Prolotherapy: This treatment involves the injection of an irritant, such as dextrose, into tender ligaments, tendons and adjacent joint spaces. The technique is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as ligament pathology, tendinopathy, fasciopathy and osteoarthritis.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections: This therapy offers a proven, drug-free alternative to treat chronic pain caused by musculoskeletal issues. Injections consist of concentrated platelets prepared from centrifuging a solution of your own whole blood with citrate or other compounds.
Hormone replacement therapy: Depending on your health history and lifestyle, some women may benefit from hormone replacement to relieve menopausal symptoms. We carefully explore the benefits and risks with you individually.
Trigger point injections: TPIs use a local anesthetic or a corticosteroid to treat the painful areas of muscle spasms, typically in the shoulder or upper back, which get knotted up or won’t relax. These knots may be associated with tension headaches and fibromyalgia in addition to muscle pain.
Sports ergonomics: Athletes can reduce their risk of injury and perform more efficiently with a careful study of their ergonomics. By collecting and analyzing this information, we create individually tailored exercise plans for runners, cyclists and other athletes.
