Skin-to-Skin Bonding
We encourage skin-to-skin bonding between you and your baby, also known as Kangaroo Care.
During skin-to-skin bonding, your baby is held upright against your bare chest for at least one hour.
Skin-to-skin bonding benefits
There are many benefits to this novel type of therapy, including:
- Potentially decreases hospital time
- Improves the mother's milk supply
- Helps your baby gain weight more quickly
- It lowers your baby's heart rate and regulates breathing
- It enables direct bonding between you and your baby
How is it done?
We recommend that you wear a button-down shirt or gown that is open in the front. Do not wear heavy perfumes or lotions.
The nurse will help place the baby on your chest. Your baby will be wearing a diaper, and a blanket will be placed over you and your infant.
How often is it done?
Skin-to-skin is ideally done once a day.
