Vocal Cord Papilloma

Vocal cord papillomas are small, wart-like growths caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). The condition is also known as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP).

Symptoms

When they are in their earliest stages, papillomas are small but can cause hoarseness and voice changes.

As papillomas become larger, they can lead to shortness of breath.

Treatment

Papillomas are removed during a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

While you are awake, a flexible camera and laser are passed through your nose and a KTP laser is used to remove the disease. The normal vocal cord tissue is not touched.

The entire procedure takes about 10-20 minutes. You will be able to go home the same day and resume your normal diet. Because you are not sedated, you will be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment.
