Migraine-Related Dizziness

Migraine-related dizziness is characterized by episodic vertigo or constant dizzy feeling. The condition is also associated with light or sound sensitivity. Sometimes, significant motion sensitivity may be present.

The periods of dizziness can last anywhere from a few minutes to several weeks or months. 

Symptoms

There are several signs of migraine-related dizziness, including:

  • Difficulty watching TV when there is too much movement
  • Difficulty looking at a computer monitor when scrolling up and down
  • Fluctuating hearing loss
  • Buzzing or ringing noise in the ear
  • Pressure in the ear
  • History of car sickness as a child

Many things can exacerbate the symptoms, including:

  • Stress
  • Certain foods such as red wine, chocolate, processed meat, MSG and cheeses
  • Changes in sleep patterns, including getting too much or too little sleep
  • Skipping meals

Causes and treatment 

Migraine-related dizziness is believed to be caused by genetics and environmental factors.

As treatment, your physician may recommend medications along with lifestyle modifications that may include:
