Labyrinthitis
Labyrinthitis is characterized by: severe spinning dizziness and imbalance that comes on suddenly. The condition lasts two to three weeks and is associated with hearing loss.
Symptoms
When you have labyrinthitis, any movement or just sitting still can make you feel dizzy. You also may have:
- Nausa and vomiting
- Hearing loss
- Ringing in one ear (tinnitus)
Causes and treatment
A virus infection of the inner ear is believed to be the cause of labyrinthitis.
Since it is caused by a virus, there is no cure for labyrinthitis. Treatment is aimed at relieving discomfort and easing symptoms:
- Medications to reduce dizziness
- Medications to reduce nausea
- Steroid injections behind the ear drum (to reduce long-term hearing loss)
