Chordomas

A chordoma is a tumor that develops from remnants of embryonic tissues. They are often found outside of the covering of the brain (dura). In approximately 10 percent of cases, they are malignant.

They can develop at any age, but are most common in men between the ages of 20 and 40 years old.

Although they rarely spread to other areas, they often invade the structures surrounding them, so they almost always require treatment.

The surgical approach to treating chordomas is complex and removing the tumor completely may not be possible. This is because of their location near important structures such as the spinal cord, brain stem, nerves and arteries.

If the tumor can't be removed completely, radiation is also recommended.
