IN THE NEWS: As the cofounder of the ophthalmic branch of Women for World Health, UCI Health ophthalmologist Dr. Sameh Mosaed travels to developing countries to perform eyesight-saving cataract and glaucoma surgeries.
Mosaed recently shared with Medscape how the missions have impacted her.
“For each person, if you reverse their blindness from a cataract, it frees them to go back to the workplace. That’s tremendous.
“This work has changed my life and my outlook on medicine. In these countries, the gratitude the patients have and the impact you can make are so profound. The emotional and spiritual nourishment really carries me through the year.”
Mosaed is an ophthalmologist at the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. She has repeatedly been recognized as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association.
