IN THE NEWS: It’s normal to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. If it happens more than twice a night, however, it could be a sign of an enlarged prostate.

"The prostate, normally about the size of a walnut, lies between the bladder and the urethra. As new tissue grows — a natural phenomenon in men as they age — it blocks some of the flow of urine through the urethra.”

The growth also puts pressure on the bladder, causing the urge to urinate more frequently.

Yafi is board-certified urologist and medical director of Men's Health Services at the UCI Health Center for Urological Care, as well as an associate professor at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. His specialties include erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, prosthetic surgery, male infertility and other men’s health conditions.

Yafi is the author of more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He has received numerous national and international awards and recognitions. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and an active member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), the American Society of Andrology, the American Urological Association (AUA) and the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU).
