Peanut allergy study changes recommendations, says UCI Health expert

IN THE NEWS: For years, new parents were advised to keep their children away from peanut products until three years of age to reduce the chances of an allergy developing.
The Learning Early About Peanut Allergy (LEAP) clinical trial has upended that recommendation. It found that exposing children to peanut products early made it less likely that the allergy would form at all.
Dr. Jenny Lee, a UCI Health allergist and immunologist, spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the study, with which she was not involved.
“Guidance and recommendations prior to the LEAP study, where we were just avoiding peanuts because we were afraid of peanut allergy, was completely thrown out the window. It changed the way that we practice.”
Lee is a board-certified UCI Health allergist and immunologist who specializes in the care of both adults and children. She is also an assistant professor in the Division of Basic and Clinical Immunology in the Department of Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine.
Among Lee’s clinical interests are a range of allergic and immunologic conditions, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic sinusitis, hives, insect sting allergies and immunodeficiency conditions.
