IN THE NEWS: Uterine fibroids can impact a woman’s life at any age. These non-cancerous growths of the uterus are not dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable and cause complications in some cases. They often appear during a woman’s childbearing years so it’s important to understand the symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
UCI Health gynecologist Dr. Naghmeh Salamat-Saberi spoke to Black Doctor about the growths and how they are treated. She stresses the need to closely monitor menstrual cycles and in the event of any changes in periods, like unusually heavy or prolonged bleeding, severe menstrual cramps or pelvic pain, to consult a physician.
“Treatment of fibroids may depend on your age and reproductive goals,” she says.
Salamat-Saberi is a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UCI School of Medicine. Her clinical interests are in general gynecology, uterine fibroids and minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery. Salamat-Saberi is the author or co-author of numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.
