UCI Health among nation’s top 10 academic medical centers for high-quality care
Outpatient care network is also ranked one of the top 10 ambulatory systems in the U.S.

Orange, Calif. — UCI Health has been recognized as a five-star hospital and a top 10 performer nationally in the 2023 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Annual Ranking by Vizient, Inc. UCI Medical Center was ranked in the top 10 for comprehensive academic medical centers in the U.S. for inpatient care. The UCI Health outpatient care network was also ranked among the top 10 ambulatory systems nationwide.

The Vizient Quality and Accountability and ratings in inpatient and ambulatory care are among the most comprehensive assessments of quality and safety a health system can face.

UCI Health is Orange County’s only academic health system and benchmarks its quality and safety performance against the nation’s top health systems. Vizient analyzes data for 116 centers in its comprehensive academic medical center cohort. The 2023 recognition is for the period spanning July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. The Birnbaum award honors academic medical centers and community hospitals that demonstrate excellence in delivering high-quality care based on measures of safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity of care.
UCI Medical Center has consistently been recognized for quality and safety. The health system was cited as a top performer by Vizient in its 2022 Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Ranking, one of only four facilities in the U.S. to be recognized for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality outpatient care. UCI Medical Center also received the Birnbaum Quality Leadership Award in 2021.
