UCI Health, one of America’s 'Best Cancer Hospitals'

UCI Health has been recognized as one of America’s best cancer hospitals by Newsweek in its inaugural rankings of the specialty, highlighting the academic health system’s commitment to exceptional cancer care.

A leader in cancer care

The UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only 53 centers designated as comprehensive by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the only one based in Orange County. The cancer center offers one of the region’s largest early phase cancer clinical trials programs.

 

The NCI designation affirms the cancer center team’s expertise in translating breakthrough scientific findings into clinical treatments. It also underscores the center's commitment to prevention research as well as community outreach and education.

The cancer center is home to the county’s only adult hematopoietic stem-cell transplant program, which allows many patients to receive this lifesaving treatment near home. The program received national accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), an achievement that took just two years. It also has been named a CalOptima Center of Excellence.

UCI Health has consistently been recognized as one of the nation's top hospitals for cancer services and ranked No. 46 by U.S. News & World Report for 2022-23. It is also a designated Blue Distinction® Center for Complex and Rare Cancers for offering comprehensive adult care delivered by expert teams with advanced training for such cancers.

The Newsweek rankings are based on:

• A nationwide online survey of healthcare professionals and hospital managers with oncology knowledge
• Hospital quality metrics with a focus on indicators relevant to oncology care
• Patient survey results

Only hospitals that met the minimum thresholds for all three data sources were eligible for the analysis.

In 2024, UCI Health will more than triple the treatment space available for cancer care when it opens the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care facility at the UCI Health — Irvine medical campus.
