UCI Health nephrologists recognized for excellence, commitment to improving kidney health

UCI Health nephrologists Dr. Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh and Dr. Ekamol Tantisattamo were recently recognized as Heroes in Nephrology by the George Lopez Foundation.

Lopez, a comedian and actor, received a kidney transplant in 2005 and has dedicated his foundation to increasing community awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.

Kalantar-Zadeh, chief of the Division of Nephrology, Hypertension, and Kidney Transplantation in the UCI School of Medicine, recently published a paper in The Lancet that provides a seminar on chronic kidney disease and addresses kidney function-preserving lifestyle, dietary and pharmacological strategies.

By 2040, it is estimated that chronic kidney disease will become the fifth leading cause of death globally.
