Do cranberry supplements help fight urinary tract infections?
April 22, 2016
IN THE NEWS: Cranberry supplements have long been recommended as an alternative to antibiotics in helping to prevent urinary tract infections, which are a common ailment in women. International news agency Reuters reports on the findings of a recent study which found that supplements made from cranberry juice act much faster and are more effective than those made from the skins.
Dr. Deborah Wing, a UCI Health gynecologist, told Reuters that using food products could reduce some healthcare costs and help relieve pain and suffering. “Cranberry may be better for prevention than treatment,” she explained. “To treat a UTI, people should consume cranberry products daily, and in frequent doses throughout the day, which may be very hard to do.”
