UCI Health neurologist saves stroke patient with remote diagnosis

February 01, 2016

IN THE NEWS: Shortly after her arrival, a 56-year-old stroke patient at Corona Regional Medical Center was remotely evaluated and diagnosed by a neurology expert at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

In an article in The Press Enterprise, Robin Gardner describes how the UCI Health neurologist immediately recommended the clot-busting drug tissue plasma activator be administered. Within an hour of treatment, she regained full use of her arm and ability to speak, and has since made a full recovery.

Her happy ending is due in large part to the tele-stroke program, one of three specialty healthcare areas in which physicians at UC Irvine Medical Center and Corona Regional Medical Center collaborate. The partnership between the two healthcare systems was announced in November 2014.
