Managing rather than avoiding trauma helps healing, says UC Irvine disaster recovery expert

IN THE NEWS:  From the mass shooting incidents at Sandy Hook Elementary School to the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs to the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, officials have to answer questions about the best way to lessen the trauma for employees upon their to return to work.

In a Los Angeles Times story, UCI Health trauma/disaster psychology expert Merritt Schreiber, PhD, says although people want to avoid traumatic events, avoidance has side effects. “We want to manage the trauma, not yield to it,” he said.

“My recommendation is not whether you reopen, it’s how you prepare those involved for it.”
