Ultrasound can be more useful than mammography for diagnosing breast cancer in some women, study shows

IN THE NEWS: Findings of a recent study indicate that ultrasound is better that mammography at diagnosing in detecting invasive breast cancers and cancers without calcification. UCI Health breast imaging expert tells Reuters Health that these results are encouraging, especially for women with dense breasts. The Reuters story was published on the Yahoo Health news site.
Although ultrasound images result in a greater number of false positives than mammograms, Feig says that the decision “is a matter of judgment” for each woman. He says that women with dense breasts in particular may decide that earlier detection of a more invasive cancer is worth risk of a false positive and a biopsy.
