UC Irvine bariatric surgeon reflects on the evolution of weight-loss surgery

IN THE NEWS: Laparoscopic techniques for weight-loss surgery were first developed in the early 1990s, but it took considerable experience with the technique to perform the procedure safely, UCI Health surgeon Dr. Ninh T. Nguyen says in an article in General Surgery News.
Nguyen, chief of gastrointestinal surgery at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, says there is a "steep learning curve" to performing bariatric procedures safely with laparoscopic techniques.
But in the hands of trained surgeons, the minimally invasive approach offered lower rates of complications, less pain and faster recovery than open bariatric surgery, Ninh and his colleagues reported in study published by the Journal of the American College of Surgery.
