UC Irvine’s Dr. Porto comments on midwife case

N THE NEWS: ABC News cited Dr. Manuel Porto in a report about a Virginia midwife who was prosecuted in the death of an infant whose head became entrapped for more than 20 minutes during a delivery. Porto, chairman of UC Irvine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said surgical intervention would likely be necessary in this type of case.
“Over 95 percent of patients presenting for delivery with a singleton breech presentation at term in a hospital in the USA today will have a Caesarean delivery,” said Porto. “The umbilical cord circulation is completely cut off generally in a trapped head situation like this.”
