Breakthrough for some melanoma patients

IN THE NEWS: Dr. Janellen Smith discussed FDA approval of a new melanoma drug with the Orange County Register. The drug uses the body’s own immune system to attack skin tumors, acting like a “gas pedal” in a car and giving the go-ahead to attack.
“You’re saying to the immune system, this is something we should go after,” said Smith, a professor of dermatology at UC Irvine and co-program director at UC Irvine Medical Center’s Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
