Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Care

Our neurologists have specialized training to help you manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s and other movement disorders in the long-term.

With movement disorders, we strive to reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life through medications and rehabilitative therapies.

We also take a holistic approach, with integrative health offerings and support groups that enhance all aspects of your life.

Our approach to Parkinson’s and movement disorders

At the UCI Health Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Program, we specialize in diagnosing and treating Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and dystonia. These and other movement disorders affect your central nervous system, causing rapid, slow or uncontrolled movements. With the proper care, medications and therapies, you can manage your symptoms and get back to living.

Our approach is to place you at the center of all our efforts—we truly care about how our work impacts your life. We offer a dynamic combination of compassion and leading edge treatment.

To get you the best possible outcome, our doctors draw upon all treatment methods, including exercise and rehabilitative therapies for walking, balance, speech and swallowing. When appropriate, we also offer advanced therapies, including deep brain stimulation (DBS) and dopamine-promoting medications.

We also work closely with the UCI Health Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute. It’s a hub of integrative therapies such as acupuncture, Tai chi and other practices to help you with balance and prevention.

How we work together

Because movement disorders have multiple symptoms, our neurologists forge close relationships with a large variety of practitioners.

As you need them, we work with neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, primary care doctors, neuropsychiatrists, imaging specialists, neurophysiologists and therapists.

Why choose UCI Health for Parkinson’s and movement disorder care?

As the only academic medical center in Orange County, we offer world class clinical trials

Our specialists lead the way in researching movement disorders to better understand how to achieve earlier diagnosis and improve treatment. If you qualify for an appropriate clinical trial, you may have access to medicines not yet widely available.

Our Neurogenetics Program is a powerful support specialty within the movement disorders program

Our neurogenetics specialist pinpoints the genetic causes of ataxia, Huntington's disease and other movement disorders. We specialize in diagnosing rare diseases and can help you understand exactly what condition you’re dealing with.

Our Parkinson's Wellness Program offers weekly classes

You'll work with therapists with specialized training in Parkinson's and neurologic rehabilitation. This class is for those with Parkinson's or similar symptoms, offering strategies to improve posture, balance, and daily function.

We also sponsor a Parkinson's Support Group

In this group, our therapists will help you and your loved ones face the challenges posed by Parkinson's disease. The group meets every other month via Zoom and can become an encouraging anchor of your treatment.

As a teaching institution, our faculty and clinicians have specialty, advanced training and share knowledge freely

All of our faculty have trained in postgraduate fellowship programs and most of our faculty are also clinical. Our faculty and clinicians teach their peers at a national and international level.

We’re dedicated to providing the next generation of doctors with comprehensive training. Through education, we stay up-to-date on the latest treatments so you have access to our best tools.
