Neuroscience ICU
If you have a neurological emergency, our state-of-the-art Neuro ICU and neurointensivists ensure the best possible care and outcomes.
Our team offers you round-the-clock care for seizure disorder, stroke, traumatic brain injury, aneurysm and other critical conditions.
Our approach to neuro-ICU care
It can be frightening to suddenly need to deal with a disorder affecting your brain. We treat you with compassion as a whole person.
Our Neuro-ICU is a highly specialized 12-bed unit. Symptoms may send you to the emergency room where, after an evaluation, doctors may refer you to us. We treat emergencies like traumatic brain injuries or other neurological problems needing constant care and monitoring.
Neurology is one of the most complex areas of medicine. When there’s an urgent need, neurological problems are best treated by specialists with advanced neuromonitoring, neuroimaging and critical care experience.
How we work together
In an ICU setting, speed and accuracy are essential. Our two main priorities are quickly and accurately diagnosing you and then providing 24/7 care to expedite your recovery.
Our neurointensivists lead your care, using their advanced training to manage both aneurysms and underlying conditions like diabetes. We take a collaborative approach to provide balanced, integrated care. Depending on your needs, your team may include:
- Neurointensivists
- Neurologists
- Neurosurgeons
- Critical care medicine physicians
- Nurse practitioners
- Physician assistants
- Registered nurses
- Clinical nurse specialists
- Pharmacists
- Patient care assistants
- Dietitians
- Respiratory therapists
- Physical therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech therapists
- Social workers
Our doctors use AI tools to rapidly rule out certain conditions. This speeds up your diagnosis, saving time during each critical minute.

The neurointensivist takes on ICU roles that might otherwise be provided by multiple subspecialists
We still work in a highly coordinated way with different healthcare providers. But the advanced training of our neurointensivists means they can take on the role of neurologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists and endocrinologists. This expert knowledge speeds up your care when every moment really counts.
Our neuro-ICU's state-of-the-art technology enables us to deliver world-class care
We have the most sophisticated imaging tools, robot-assisted surgery and multiple AI tools to deliver state-of-the-art diagnosis and care.
When compared with similar patients treated in a general ICU, Neuro-ICU patients do better
Fellowship training is coveted and only offered to doctors who already demonstrate a top level of expertise. In a neuro-ICU led by a board-certified neurointensivist, you’ll likely have improved outcomes, a shorter stay and lower total costs of care.
As the only academic medical center in Orange County, our robust infrastructure leads to cohesive, integrated care
Our large infrastructure means you can access every kind of subspecialist as you need them. Our nurse navigators and other healthcare providers ensure that your care is coordinated.
As an academic center, our superb research and clinical trials program is another strength. We are constantly evolving novel treatments and making experimental medicines available if you qualify for available trials.
