What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of skeletal muscles that help form the core of your body. These muscles are located at the bottom of your abdomen and run from the pubic bone to the tailbone, wrapping around the vaginal and rectal openings.
The pelvic floor muscles have four primary functions:
- To support all pelvic organs
- To collectively work with your lower back, hips, abdomen and breathing muscles to allow normal movement and prevent problems with other joints, muscles and nerves in your body
- To assist the sphincter muscles in preventing the involuntary loss of gas, urine or fecal matter
- To provide normal sexual function
