Pain in Children

Pediatric pain treatment involves providing specialized care to a young population of patients who suffer from a variety of acute and chronic pain syndromes. Unlike in adults, pain in children is often difficult to assess effectively and aggressive treatment is not well-tolerated.

Chronic pain in children seems to have more of a social impact on the overall health of children than what is seen in the adult population.

Signs of a child in pain

Children in pain are:

  • Missing school
  • Avoiding friends
  • Detaching themselves from activities they previously enjoyed
  • Demonstrating a deterioration in their schoolwork

What results is not only a physical symptom of pain, but also significant anxiety, depression, and avoidance of friends and family. This can make the treatment of pain even more difficult.

Diagnosis and treatment

We offer inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and treatment of pain in children. Our unique group of specialists have expert training in pediatric pain in order to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to managing and treating pain in children.

This includes a wide network of physicians, psychologists, physiatrists as well as a strong provider referral base to work effectively to treat pain in children as a disease, and not just symptom management.

Treatment goals

The central focus of treatment is the restoration of function, utilizing a coordinated and progressive set of therapeutic strategies to tailor treatment for each child.

The key in evaluating children suffering from pain is to take enough time to listen to every patient. Our hope and goal is to help children regain functionality, as well as to empower children to take control of their bodies in order to return to the activities they previously enjoyed.
