Post-Concussion Syndrome
Most people are able to recover from a concussion within several days or weeks. Post-concussion syndrome is a concussion complication in which recovery can take several months to more than a year.
Symptoms
Post-concussion symptoms include:
- Anxiety
- Behavioral changes
- Dizziness
- Emotional changes
- Fatigue
- Headaches

- Insomnia
- Irritability
- Loss of concentration
- Loss of memory
- Sensitivity to noise and light

Risk factors
There are three primary risk factors for developing post-concussion syndrome:
- Your age. As you get older, you are at greater risk of developing post-concussion syndrome.
- Your sex. Women are more likely to develop post-concussion syndrome.
- Sustaining trauma. Concussions as a result of assault, accidents, falls and sports have a link to post-concussion syndrome.
Treatment
Patients who show symptoms of post-concussion syndrome are able to recover with plenty of rest and by reducing their stress.
Your physician may also treat the specific symptoms of post-concussion syndrome that you are experiencing. For example, pain medications may be given for headaches, while you may be referred to a psychiatrist for any neurological symptoms.
