Chief Health Sciences Counsel

Peter Schneider is the chief health sciences counsel at UCI Health.

Schneider provides legal advice regarding all aspects of healthcare law to the chancellor, executive vice chancellor and provost, vice chancellor for Health Affairs, the president and CEO of UCI Health, the dean of UC Irvine School of Medicine, president of UCI Medical Center Medical Staff, and other members of clinical enterprise and College of Health Sciences leadership teams.

Schneider is a member of the CEO cabinet and Clinical Enterprise Leadership Council, Governing Body Advisory Committee and Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Schneider supervises the legal team advising UCI Health and oversees the UCI Health Risk and Regulatory Affairs Department. His practice includes state and federal regulatory issues, acquisitions and affiliations with various entities, physician discipline and medical staff matters, accreditation issues, internal and external investigations, clinical enterprise and medical school strategic planning, and faculty-, resident- and medical student-related matters.

Before joining UC Irvine, Schneider was university counsel in the University of California’s Office of General Counsel in Oakland. He had primary responsibility for legal oversight of the UC Hospital and Professional Medical Liability Program involving its then five medical schools and six teaching hospitals, two affiliated county hospitals, student health centers and all faculty and residents. He was also responsible for initiating a systemwide medical risk management committee of medical directors from all facilities to concentrate on systematic sharing of risk reduction strategies implemented by the campuses.
