Dr. Alpa S. Patel is a board-certified ophthalmologist at UCI Health, specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology. As an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, she is dedicated to advancing the field through education and innovation.
Her clinical interests include cataract surgery and specialty lenses, dry eye, pterygium surgery, glaucoma, diabetic exams and laser surgery treatments.
Patel focuses on several key areas to enhance her patients' quality of life. She offers advanced technology cataract surgery, with a particular emphasis on correcting astigmatism and presbyopia for the growing number of patients experiencing age-related vision changes. Her commitment to early intervention is evident in her interest in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, which aims to prevent progressive vision loss.
Additionally, Patel is passionate about treating dry eyes, striving to stabilize the tear film and improve overall vision quality. Her goal is to ensure that her patients not only see clearly, but also enjoy a fulfilling life. With her expertise and compassionate approach, Patel is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for her patients.
She earned her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California, Irvine. She was then awarded her medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, followed by an internship at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch and furthered her training with a fellowship in comprehensive ophthalmology at the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.
Before joining UCI Health and the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, Patel practiced in Los Angeles, where she balanced her time between private practice and training UCLA ophthalmology residents as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Greater Los Angeles VA, serving our nation’s veterans.
