Dr. Alexander C. Minella is a board-certified UCI Health hematologist-oncologist.

He earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Minella is a physician-scientist with more than 20 years of professional experience. Through 2017, he worked as an academic oncologist and ran an independent research laboratory focused on studying the interplay between control of the cell division cycle and molecular mechanisms of cancer. From 2017-2024, he worked within the biopharmaceutical industry and focused on development of early phase clinical studies for blood diseases and hematologic malignancies. 

Minella’s clinical focus at UCI is to care for patients with acute leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. He is also Medical Director for UCI’s Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility that conducts clinical manufacturing of investigational cell and gene therapies. In this capacity, his goal is to support and enhance investigator-initiated clinical trials of cell and gene therapies.
