
Reed I. Ayabe, MD

Dr. Reed Ayabe is a board-certified UCI Health surgical oncologist and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon who specializes in the surgical management of liver and pancreas cancers, including cholangiocarcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases, pancreas cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. He has a special interest in minimally invasive, robotic approaches to the treatment of these diseases.
Ayabe received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, before completing general surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. During residency, Ayabe completed a two-year research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, where he was given the Surgeon-Scientist Award and Clinical Excellence Award for exceptional performance in research and clinical surgery, respectively. Next, he completed a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
In addition to his clinical work, Ayabe has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has helped launch several clinical trials. He also runs a translational research laboratory focused on modeling and targeting cholangiocarcinoma pathobiology.
His philosophy is to care for every patient as if they were his own family member.
