Dr. Matthew D. Whealon is a board-certified UCI Health surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive and robot-assisted colorectal surgery.
A fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon, Whealon is an expert in the minimally invasive treatment of colon, rectal and anal cancers, colon and rectal polyps, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse and sphincter salvage. He also treats anorectal disorders, including pilonidal cysts and anal fissures, fistulas and hemorrhoids.
He earned his medical degree at the UCI School of Medicine, followed by a residency in general surgery at UCI Medical Center. where he served as chief resident and completed a research fellowship in surgery. Next, he completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine Health System in Philadelphia.
Whealon is the author or co-author of many research papers published in major journals, including Surgical Oncology, Surgical Endoscopy, The American Surgeon and Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery.
