He earned his medical degree at University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Alameda Health System Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif., where he was chief resident, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at University of California, San Francisco. Next, he completed a fellowship in pulmonary vascular disease at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.  

Rofael also speaks fluent Arabic and intermediate-level Spanish.
