Dr. Marcelo W. Hinojosa is a board-certified UCI Health gastrointestinal surgeon who specializes in advanced, minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery.
His expertise includes metabolic and weight-loss surgery, surgical management of complex esophageal and gastric disease, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, gastric tumors and malignancies. He also has a clinical interest in the surgical management of complex hernias, including ventral, incisional, inguinal and hiatal hernias.
Hinojosa earned his medical degree at UC Irvine, followed by a residency in general surgery and a research fellowship in gastrointestinal surgery at the UC Irvine Medical Center. He went on to complete an advanced gastrointestinal minimally invasive surgical fellowship focused on esophageal, gastric and bariatric surgery at the University of Washington. He also earned a certificate of training in metabolic and bariatric surgery from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Prior to joining UCI Health, he was an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Washington.
Hinojosa's research interests include metabolic and bariatric surgery outcomes, gastroesophageal reflux and esophageal physiology in bariatric population. He has contributed to a number of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He also is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of multiple national societies, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American Hernia Society and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
